HOT’s 19th season brings exciting melodic works not seen in Joplin before. Both the fall and spring productions will be performed at the beautiful Scottish Rite Temple at 5th & Byers. A double-bill of one act operas, sung in English, will open the season this fall. The spring show will feature a dazzling cabaret setting complete with wine and food for a spellbinding evening of great American music.
November 10 & 12
The Old Maid and the Thief by Gian Carlo Menotti reveals the plethora of secrets that a small town can hold! A gathering of quaint characters including a busybody, a young housemaid, a town gossip and a wandering bum create a puzzle— which one is the real thief? Menotti wrote this popular opera for radio broadcast in 1939 and then adapted it for the stage.
Leonard Bernstein began writing Trouble in Tahiti while on his honeymoon in 1951. Its music reflects the many styles for which he is most recognized and is the only work for which he wrote both the words and the music. Follow the melodic journey of Sam and Dinah as they try to find their way back to love and communication. Life in suburbia is not as idyllic as they thought!
Presented in celebration of the 2018 Centennial of Bernstein’s birth.
